Bastosan na talaga!

How can our leaders agree to a treaty which allows the transfer of prisoners convicted of henious crimes. Isn't this a blatant violation of a country's sovereignty? It also puts to naught the basic tenet of criminal justice that criminals have to answer for their crimes at the place of commission. What will prevent other influential countries like the US to ink a similar treaty in order it can remedy problems like Daniel Smith of the Subic Rape Case.

I cannot blame Mrs. Thelma Chiong, the mother of the raped and murdered Jacqueline and Marijoy Chiong. She called the Arroyo government "criminal friendly". This is not far from the thought that "birds of the same feather, help each other".

(According to court records, Marijoy was abducted and raped by several men. To "finished"her, the rapists pushed her off a cliff. She died of brain hemorrage. Jacqueline who was also abducted and raped is yet to be found . The convicted rapist, Francisco Juan “Paco” Larrañaga, is a great-grandson of the late President Sergio Osmeña Sr. and scion of the prominent Osmeña clan. He is currently appealing his case and maintains his innocence. According to the Philippine Inquirer, this drew calls for a “fair trial” from foreign groups, including the Madrid Bar Association, Basque Bar, Barcelona Bar, a rights watchdog group from the European Union, and the European Parliament. Larrañaga, who is half-Spanish, also found allies in the Spanish Inter-Parliamentary Union delegation consisting of legislators from Spain’s ruling and opposition blocs. )

Disturbing Movie Scenes, Part 1

When I was small, I was afraid of tidal waves. I feared living near the beach and wake up one morning finding myself floating in the middle of the ocean. I used to wish that our beach house was perched atop a coconut tree so that the big tsunami waves- if indeed they come -will not drown me.

I was at the cinema the other day enjoying GI Joe with my kids when one of the movie previews bothered me. This is the teaser of the upcoming sci-fi movie "2012".

I searched You Tube for that teaser and found it.

Here a monk rushing to a bell fry in a desperate move to warn the others. Suddenly, giant waves come rushing over the mountains to overrun the hapless bell fry. The scene obviously referred to the Himalayan region where humongous mountains seem unreachable. My quick calculation place these giant waves to more than several kilometers high!!! No point of running to high ground which was my childhood solution to fear of big waves.

I was relieved that my kids were not bothered by the harrowing experience. They were so excited to watch their GI Joe heroes. I protest the insertion of disturbing previews during movies which cater to a young audience. It has the same effect when sex-oriented movie teasers are shown during the screening of the Lord of the Rings. Not only traumatic but in utter bad taste!
